It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Troy on November 27, 2020 in Edmonton, AB at 44 years of age. Troy was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010. He bravely underwent three surgeries and cancer treatments over the last ten years until his tumour became inoperable. Our family is grateful for the time we had with Troy and the quality of life he was able to have despite his illness. Troy beat many odds and kept his sense of humour throughout his illness.
Troy grew up in the small town of Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan where he was a part of many community activities and events. From childhood bicycle fun to teenage dirt biking, neighbourhood street hockey, tobogganing on the Butte hill, baseball tournaments, and more, Troy will be remembered for his cheerfulness, warm welcomes, and goofy humour. These small town roots were evident when he moved to Edmonton and made some wonderful friendships with his neighbours in his new community.
After graduating from Greenall High School (Balgonie, Sask.) in 1995, Troy obtained his Journeyperson certificate in the Steamfitter-Pipefitter trade in 2002. In 2008, Troy graduated from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton with a certificate in Engineering Design and Drafting Technology.
Troy’s professional skills were well regarded by his colleagues on the many projects he worked on in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In 2007, Troy was so very proud to become a dad to his precious daughter, Jordana. He treasured his daddy-daughter time and sentimentally kept all the mementos Jordana made him: many cards, crafts and art work.
Troy’s many interests were centered on sports and outdoor activities with family and friends: water skiing, mountain biking, volleyball, hockey, baseball, golfing, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, dirt biking and cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Always the daredevil, Troy’s adventures included several arm casts, which did not slow down his mountain biking or dampen his sense of humour. Some of Troy’s other notable adventures with friends included snowmobile trips on the Prairies and in the Rocky Mountains, camping trips in The Tin Castle, time spent at the Entner cabin at Echo Lake, and at the Obrigewitsch farm with Corey. There was always something fun to reminisce about with friends and family.
One of Troy’s greatest pleasures was for him and Jordana to spend the summer in Saskatchewan to go camping and visit with his parents and large extended family, as well as his friends and their families. The summer of 2019 was special when Troy’s sister Janeen and her family travelled from Ottawa to visit with them in Pilot Butte.
Troy had a close relationship with his parents Wally and Janis, who were fortunate to be able to assist him with life’s challenges and to be present to celebrate moments of joy.
Troy made several trips to Ottawa, hosted by his sister Janeen and her spouse Stacey. Including the summer of 2001, where Troy worked in a bike shop and spent his free time mountain biking in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. In 2016, Troy returned to Ottawa with Jordana to show her the sights and visit her aunt, uncle and cousin.
Troy will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by his beloved daughter, Jordana, parents Wally and Janis, sister Janeen, brother-in-law Stacey and niece Natalie, as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbours and his Boxer dog, Josie.
Thank you to everyone for the love and support Troy and his family have received over this ten year journey of hope and gratitude. Troy was blessed to have friends and extended family throughout Western Canada that made surprise visits to Edmonton during hospital stays and other stressful times.
Thank you to Troy’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Chow, the doctors, nurses, and all his caregivers from the University of Alberta Hospital, Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton, and the Hospice staff at Foyer Lacombe Care Center in St Albert for the compassion and care Troy received.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
