Pauline Valentine passed away peacefully at the University Hospital in Edmonton on June 6, 2021, at age 85. She was born in Regina, SK, to Marie Elizabeth Nault and John Goulet. Dearest sister of Irene, Denis, Theresa, Clara, Paul, Richard, and Murielle. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Catherine (1956), husband Wayne (2002), brother Richard (2017), and her youngest sister Marie. She leaves behind her children Steven (Rhonda), Ken (Nancy), Terry (Deborah), Richard (Janice), Sheila (Christopher), and Sharon (Harold). She was also blessed with 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and 3 great-great step grandchildren. The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Lang and the wonderful staff of 4G4 for their gentle and compassionate care.
Even though her early childhood years in a convent school were sometimes difficult, she persevered and eventually found her course in life as a Mother. She was blessed with many grandchildren as they were blessed with her in her role as a Grandmother.
We all thought that she had some gypsy blood in her as rarely would she and Wayne live at one location for more than a couple of years before the itch and need overtook them to move once again. Secretly, we knew that it was her way of purchasing new furniture without raising the anger of Wayne (not that he had an angry bone in his body). She was a loving and generous mother rising to the task of helping when there was a need.
Mom was an enthusiast of games whether it was Crib or Scrabble. But, her favourite game through to her final days was Bingo. All those who visited her were treated to amazing meals and incredible pastries. Many a pound was gained with each visit. She also had many other talents and skills including knitting providing sweaters, hats, gloves and scarves to the grandchildren. These were all treasured.
Mom is now riding a golf cart with the love of her life, Wayne. Together they will spend eternity smiling, laughing and no doubt – playing Bingo.
As a grandmother, she took great pride and joy in offering her love, advice, and support where she could. She taught her grandchildren that life was hard and that nothing would come to us for free. She was as stern as she was loving. Always willing to put her grandchildren first as her love was genuine. It may have been tough love, but it was true love when it really mattered. We will miss you, Grandma – rest easy.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the UAH Neurosciences Unit or Stollery Children’s Hospital.
