It is with profound sadness that the family of Mike Hamel announces his passing on September 3, at the age of 53 years.
Mike is lovingly remembered by his wife of 18 years, Jen; son, Nathan; and youngest child, Ally. Mike is also missed by his son: Brandon (Robynne); grandson, Everett; brother, Jeffrey (Lorna); sister, Tracy (Kevin); mother, Rose; mother-in-law, Kathy; and father-in-law, Glen (Lynne); as well as Daniel (Ashley) and numerous relatives and friends.
Mike was predeceased by his father, Robert (Bob).
Mike was born in Sarnia, Ontario before living in Nova Scotia and British Columbia as a teen and young adult. After many trips across the country, he landed in Edmonton, Alberta and in 2001 fell in love with Jen.
Mike was happiest when outside quadding, fishing, and camping. Friends will remember many weekends around a campfire with a beer talking into the night. Mike enjoyed the wilderness and getting into the mud. His family amusingly recall his refrain, “Hold my beer and watch this.”
Those who knew Mike appreciated his skill for doing things with his hands – from framing houses to fixing vehicles to hardwood flooring to fixing EVERYTHING at Final Process. Mike was a dedicated husband and father. He was always in the wings supporting the interests and activities of his family.
On September 3, Mike lost his long struggle with mental health. He will always be remembered for his courage during many difficult years.
A celebration of life will be held outdoors at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 30 at 53372 Rd 215 Ardrossan, AB.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton Region, #300, 10010 – 105 St, Edmonton, AB T5J 1C4.

Sending love and prayers to Jen, Nathan and Ally. I will always remember Mike’s friendly smile and time spent volunteering together at Storm the Fort, and driving the kids when they were younger at Warm Hands. His support of Jen at races, brought a tear to my eye (Femsport), and I recall thinking, if I ever had a husband I would want him to be as supportive as Mike’s example. He was always warm and friendly to me, and I will think of him everytime I have a fire. Xxxooo
