It is with great sadness that the family of Mel Chapman shares of his passing on December 1, 2022. Mel passed peacefully while in the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 91.
Mel will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Gwen Chapman; their four children, Gail (Darrell) McKellar, Sandra (Norman) Price, Diane (Dwain) Larsen, and Byron (Anita) Chapman; eleven Grandchildren and nine Great Grandchildren, Jennifer (Trevor) Emond – Tyler, Kara and Tanner, Darren White – Kaylynn, Adalynn and Braelynn, Paul Larsen, Stephanie (Karl) Bossler – Wyatt and Riley, Kyle McKellar, Nicole Larsen, Jason McKellar, Chantel Monteith, Natasha Larsen – Theo, Jarrod Chapman and Amber Chapman.
Mel was born October 4, 1931 in Portage la Prairie, MB. He moved in 1952 to Flin Flon, MB to be closer to Gwen where he worked as a power lineman for HBM&S. Mel and Gwen were married March 27, 1954 in Flin Flon. They moved in 1957 to Edmonton where Mel was employed for the City of Edmonton which lead him to a successful career with the Alberta Housing Corporation as the Contract Administrator where he worked until his retirement in 1984.
Mel spent many weekends at the lake with his family, waterskiing, boating and fishing and enjoying the company of his Grand Children and Great Grandchildren. Mel and Gwen travelled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and Hawaii; spending most of their winters in Yuma, AZ.
In the words of Mel’s family, they will remember him for his many teachings and stories, willingness to lend a hand physically, or with his advice. Through his actions you knew that he cared deeply about his family. He had a strong work ethic, always work then fun. His compassion, integrity, sense of humour, vast knowledge of almost anything and his love for us all. He was someone to look up to, very social and always there when you needed him. He would always ask how the family was doing and what was new in their lives. He told the best stories from his younger days, he was caring and smart. He was always a very friendly and welcoming person. He could strike up a conversation with anybody and always made a friend wherever they went.
Mel was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Friend. He will be missed by many and live on forever in our hearts and memories.
A service will be held Tuesday December 20, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Dovercourt Hall 13510 Dovercourt Ave NW, Edmonton.
