Anyone who ever met Marcie will be sad to know she is no longer with us. Her warm smile, mischievous twinkle, and generosity of spirit are memories we will treasure forever.
Born Mary Louise Marceau in Coderre, Saskatchewan at the height of the Great Depression, Marcie treasured her prairie roots and the hardworking life that went with it. She was a lifelong learner, which led to a career in nursing and also to countless books that fed her curiosity and imagination. Marcie could recite many poems by heart and was a big “word nerd” who took her crossword puzzles and Scrabble games very seriously. She developed a love of opera as a teenager, a passion that would remain with her forever. Her home was often filled with the sounds of Italian arias, and the wonderful aromas of lemon loaf baking in the oven.
Marcie also travelled a lot, spending four years in Germany and seeing much of Europe, along with stops in Japan and Thailand. Her favorite place was Tofino, where she loved strolling the long glistening beaches as the waves rolled in.
Her greatest joy, though, was family. Mother to Cathy, Robb and Deborah, she drew enormous pride in their achievements and eventually became a doting grandma to Kathleen, Jennifer, Nick and Holly, as well as great-grandmother to Sage. Marcie was a single mom for most of her life, and always remembered the kindness shown to her as she struggled to raise a family. It’s a kindness she would repay many times over, and is truly our fondest memory of her.

I met Marcie when I worked at Shepherd’s Care doing a wellness project for those seniors living independently. She was one of our stars! Never a day went by that she didn’t come say hi or offer a gem about her family and life’s experiences. She loved to relate stories of nursing but more often, it was about her grandchildren and the joy they gave her. I’d visit her in her suite for a quick coffee or to problem shoot her early days of using the iPad. We met at the opera where my husband was an extra and spent many times talking about the love of that music. Her appetite for learning was infectious. I am saddened of this news but my memories of her will always be special. May you find peace and comfort in yours.

I am so sorry to hear the passing of Marcie. We became friends at Shepherd’s Care, when my mother Sophie was in long term care. Your mother would come down to help her at meal times. My mother loved her, she was alway so joyful.
May your family find peace and comfort knowing she was such a special person to so many.
