With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Dad, Poppa and Great-Poppa, John Joseph Hickey on August 31, 2023. Complications from a stroke in 2020 finally overcame his fierce battle for recovery.
He was born in Peterborough, Ontario on October 19, 1935, moved West as a young man and met and married Marilynn in Hinton, Alberta and raised a family there. He moved in later years to St. Albert which was his home at the time of his death. His great love for his family is our foundation and that unconditional love will live on in our hearts forever. Johnny was a wonderful athlete and loved the outdoors and all seasons. He was a gentle soul and respected by all who knew him. The family will celebrate his life in Hinton at a later date and he will be placed to rest, facing his beloved mountains.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Marilynn; children: Teresa Hotchkiss (Calvin), Janet Batovanja (Tony), Shauna Coss (John), and Ann Marie Gallant (Jean-Louis); grandchildren: Sheena Hotchkiss, Ryan Hotchkiss, Michael Batovanja, Mark Batovanja, Bryan Batovanja, Kelsey Repecka, Jordyn Callihoo, Benjamin Gallant and Hana Gallant; 6 great-grandchildren; as well as many family members in Peterborough and the United States.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Covenant Foundation, specifically Youville Home (Unit 4) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Youville Home. Their care and love for Johnny over the last three years went above and beyond.

Marilynn and Family:
Just to let you know we are all thinking of you and at times like this wish we were closer to give you all a hug and be with you all.
I feel John is at peace now as I feel he struggled not being able to do the things he liked to do. It would have been hard for you all to watch him like that.
We will all miss him.
Lots of Love
Linda, Jaime, Julie and Families xo
