Jim Suchla
February 16, 1961 – August 28, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Jim Suchla on August 28, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer. Jim was born on February 16, 1961, in Calgary and lived a life full of love, dedication, and passion. His journey took him through several small communities, including Bassano, Rosemary, and Winfield, Alberta, before returning to Calgary, where he built lifelong friendships and accomplished much.
Jim’s love for sports was evident from a young age. He played Little League baseball, first coached by his Dad, and later became a coach himself. At John G. Diefenbaker High School, Jim played football and made friendships that lasted a lifetime. As an adult, he found a passion for golf, often traveling to Bassano to play with his Mom and Dad, and embarked on numerous golf excursions that brought him joy. Jim enjoyed playing hockey as well, ending with men’s senior rec league participation in Calgary.
Jim was a man of many talents. As a young adult he qualified to be a fire fighter, although hiring cutbacks meant he went on to other pursuits. Jim worked for his father shingling roofs and did masonry work for Ron Thibeault before moving into sales at The Brick, where he built a successful 20+ year management career. Jim could turn his hand to almost any task or project. Later, he founded his own landscaping company, Emerald Lawns, which he recently passed on to his son, Jesse, so he could retire.
Beyond his work and sports, Jim had a passion for riding his Harley, traveling, and spending time at his home in Costa Rica. His quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and devotion to family and friends left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Jim’s outlook was unfailingly optimistic, grateful, and cheerful, and his example never failed to lift up those around him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Karen Suchla; his children, Sydney Suchla and Jesse Suchla; and his cherished grandchildren, Britton Carbone, and Ireland Free. He is also survived by his sisters, Lori Van Aalst, and Kathy Suchla; along with extended family. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Andy and Lillian Suchla. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bassano Golf Course Club House on September 21, 2024, from 1-4 pm to share memories and honour Jim’s life. Please RSVP to Karen Suchla at ksuchla@shaw.ca by September 18th.
Jim’s legacy of hard work, his love for family, and his generous spirit will continue to inspire us all. His memory will forever live on in our hearts.
